Termite Teachable Moment Video Series-Termites Under The Slab

Termite Teachable moment htttp://pestcemetery.com/Home is a place where you should feel comfortable, impregnable and secure. It’s sometimes the one place where the homeowner can look to as an old friend who’s solid, safe and a respite they can always rely on. For the most part I think most of us feel this way.

Having said that, even the surest of us all still employ things like alarm systems, cameras, security locks, smoke detectors and all sorts of home improvements to, (I guess) add to that security level we already have. Why? Because safety and security is something no home owner can have enough of…because our home is our castle and the one place we depend on to keep them and their families safe and secure.

Although termite invasion may not rise to the immediate level that say a burglar would bring. It can be just as costly in terms of lost dollars and for some, it has left them with a sinking feeling that somehow their home, their castle, was just not as invulnerable as they had once thought.

Why I Joined CPCO

diving in to untested waters https://pestcemetery.com/I have a few hard and fast rules in my life that I rarely veer away from. I think of them as life lessons that easily adapt and are applicable to many many situations. So I cite them often. My family however, has heard them so many times over the years that they’ll even do a “pre-emptive” quotation of them trying to stop me when they sense one of my long winded diatribes coming on.(I’m pretty sure they still love me) Out of all of the ones I can think of, these are my top three.

#1 Never dive head first into water which you haven’t checked its depth.

#2 Learn to kick the football and you’ll be set for life.

#3 Never join or become a member of anything,

How Bout This For A Website?

no service https://pestcemetery.com/I think we’ve all been burned to some degree or another by a business. The wait staff at a restaurant ignores your table for a 1/2 hour then the food is cold and horrible. A mechanic fixes a noise in your engine for a pretty hefty price only to have that unsettling sound start up again in a day or so. A/C companies, plumbers, Doctors, etc.etc.etc. It just happens, businesses are made up of people, people are imperfect and sometimes circumstances just add the dilemma. What can you do?

The cold hard fact is that every company out there is going to let someone down somewhere, sometime. The good news, most are going to make the effort to try and do something, (possibly) anything they can to make the situation right for you; or at least come to some sort of compromise that you can live with even if you aren’t (can’t be) totally satisfied.

Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.

Is Our Industry Doing A Terrible Job At Promoting Our Professionalism?

end of your rope httP://pestcemetery.com/Do you ever get to the end of your rope and just say out loud “enough is enough?” When you’ve been pushed on and tugged at and trodden over to the point that you just can’t stay silent anymore. I guess we as an industry haven’t reached that point because we’ve been blown about with every wind of doctrine and I fear a perfect storm is now brewing.

It’s one thing when you’ve had a bad day and the wrong word comes from a client who has no clue about our industry. Truly, this happens too often but our profession is not unique to it. The wolves are always at the door of any good endeavor. It is however entirely different when the purposeful tearing down of our noble profession comes from within-

The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie, deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.

Everybody Has A Special Deal With Jerry

lets make a deal https://pestcemetery.com/I guess I’m not a very good business man. I mean if you compare me & the stereotypical tycoon type that is described in all the guru books, I fit NONE of the definitions.

I might shave twice in one week, I’m always dirty from crawling around the belly of a home, I never do business from my cell phone & almost NEVER try to sell anyone, anything at any time. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’ve ‘unsold’ enough business in the last few years that any other company could easily make a decent route out of. Nope, you won’t find me in the sales hall of fame anytime soon.

That said, answer my office phones on any one day of the week and you’d swear I was the biggest wheeler dealer around. Apparently I’ve made all kinds of ‘special’ deals and exceptional pacts with quite a few people. My secretaries are consistently asking me, “What did you say to Mrs. So & So?, she says you said…..” & there you just fill in the blank with any one of a number of uncommon requests, favors or special services I apparently whole heartedly promised. Because, as the caller claims with unwavering confidence in their voice, “Jerry & I have a special deal worked out-he does it just for me.”

Networking On The Fly

on the fly https://pestcemetery.com/Part of ANY successful business strategy HAS to include networking. This is especially true of small business and even more specifically-the mom & pop or one man operations. Having said this, I can’t tell you how many ‘rolled eyed looks, yawns or complete mental shut downs’ I’ve seen from the “entrepreneurs” I’ve talked to when this subject is brought up. I guess what throws most is that the word is Net WORKING and for most of us, we’ve got enough of that already.

But what you may not realize–up to a certain point–I agree with them. Being a small business owner is no small task and TIME is not something you can make more of to get it all done. The thought of running down leads all day, crawling all over houses and businesses in some of the worst grunge known to man- only to then woof down dinner, kiss the wife and kids good night and then go to a networking meeting till late in the evening is not a inviting thought. And if that’s not enough, most guru’s and “growth” books tell you to belong to 2, 3 or more such groups. There just doesn’t seem to be enough time for even one of these let alone more. There has got to be an easier way!

Why Aren’t Pest Control Techs Leading The Lists In Deaths?

dead bones hand on B&G https://pestcemetery.com/Did you know there is a top 15 list of the leading causes of death? (2010)- Ugh, morbid I know, but it is enlightening in the sense that what you may think should be at the top of the list really isn’t and vice versa. Heart disease is #1 which to many is no surprise but pneumonia came in at #9 which I would have never guessed.

The top 15 list I found wasn’t as specific as I’m sure some lists are. For instance #5’s cause was accidents but it doesn’t specifically mention cars or other type of accident, it simply lumped them all together. (I guess)

What was especially intriguing to me however was the break down of deaths by poisoning and what was NOT on the list or mentioned in the break down. Namely, that professional pest control applications nor it’s applicators made the list. (note the word professionals) Also that pesticides were not ‘specifically’ in that list – they (according to what I found were #16 and no where in the abstract was the hint mention or inference of a person who practices structural pest control for a living.

Now I find that amazing because if you listen to the voiced fears of some, you’d think that the average life span of a pest control applicator couldn’t be more than a couple of years. Just the mere sight of a pest tech walking into a home or office causes some folks to pull their lapel’s up over their mouths or even head for the exits. This is almost always accompanied with the question from their trembling lips. “Is it ok if I breathe this stuff? Should I be here while you spray? Will this kill me?”

Boric Acid And Borax Are Killing You-The Safe Way

slow sickness https://pestcemetery.com/Google Borax and you’re likely to find this astounding product that does amazing things. Put boric acid in your search bar and you’ll find no less great and positive accolades. Words like safe, no side effects, harmless, healthy and the ever popular, all natural. Such words puts the potential user at ease as they use this abundant positive information in their decision to use these materials in a variety of ways.

On the other hand, add the word kill or pest control as in, does boric acid kill roaches? or, can Borax be safely used for pest control? and your search is likely to bend off into a different direction.

I have written several articles on these two substances and I’m continually amazed at the reaction this “fork in the road” produces. If interested you can look at these articles for yourself. The passion from some is quite evident. It seems that a critical look at these two godsends isn’t appreciated and since my overall theme has been missed countless times by (quote) “readers” (end quote). I thought I’d readdress the subject in a way no one could mistake.

Preventing Termites In Your Mobile Home Starts At The Foundation

termites using pier to tunnel up https://pestcemetery.com/I use to think mobile homes would never get attacked by subterranean termites. To me, there just didn’t seem to be enough wood since it seemed that it was mostly a metal shell and the steel frame on wheels. Well that was over 25 years and about 10,000 treatments ago and now it hardly seems like a week goes by without me dawning my suit and gloves, going under a mobile home and finding termites and their damage.

If there is one good thing about these houses and termites it is that in most cases, you can search the ‘under belly’ pretty thoroughly for evidence and treatments aren’t to difficult for those who have the tools. However, since most home owners I know rarely venture into this dark abyss it can sometimes be years before someone like me crawls up under the home and gives them the bad news about why the middle of their living room floor is sagging. Termites.

There is one product however that I’ve seen over the last 10 or so years that has really cut down on termites actually climbing up the piers where they can do their dirty work. In fact I’m not even sure it was designed with thwarting termites in mind but none the less, from what I’ve seen….. If you’re planning on putting a mobile or modular home (anything with a crawl space and piers) on your property, you’ll want to plan to have these as part of your foundation.

Are You An Expert In Pest Control? I hope Not

expert witness https://pestcemetery.com/Not to long ago I was contacted by a law firm asking if I’d be interested in being an “expert” in a case involving termite damage. (amazing how my little site reaches out)

I don’t mind saying–I couldn’t say NO fast enough. Part of the reason is because I just couldn’t take time away from my work but to be honest- a bigger part is I didn’t think I was qualified as an expert and didn’t want to get chewed up by a legal eagle in a suit and tie.

Also recently, there’s been a hub bub about the theory that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in anything. Some say yes, others say no and the estimates and qualifications needed for that status range all over the place. Malcolm Gladwell, the originator of 10,000 hour concept actually never said the 10k gets you to the expert level, but, that it puts you in a super stratosphere level where few reach. Phenomenon’s like Michael Jordon, Bobby Fisher, Peyton Manning, etc. And thus mere experts–well they are somewhere below. It’s a fascinating subject and it got me to wondering.

In pest control, am I an expert or a phenom……?

Does A 400 Million Year Old Springtail Disprove God?

adams hand https://pestcemetery.com/I was recently asked a question after telling a client that roaches were some 350 million years old & that the springtail is thought to be the oldest dating back some 407 million years. The reply I got came with a puzzled look and she asked inquisitively.

“How does that line up with the Bible? How can insects be so old when Adam & the beginning of Genesis is not?
After all, since you’re telling me SCIENCE could prove beyond a doubt that the earth was more than 400 million years old while from what I understand, Genesis of the Bible is only 6 to 9 thousand years old.

(estimates vary)

So, this being a pest control article, I thought you might be interested to know what I told my client. Here was my answer.

America, Land of the Pest Free

16 star American Flag https://pestcemetery.com/For the most part citizens in America are a forgiving people. Second chances abound for our stars, athletes friends and neighbors. We give the benefit of the doubt and hope for the best even when the chances of a good outcome aren’t so bright. While that may be true for our hero’s and fellow man, the same cannot be said when it comes to bugs and those who make their living killing them.

The line in the sand for pest tolerance has not moved backwards for years, if anything it has inched further toward zero tolerance and patience wears thin if people have to have what they consider ‘undue contact’ with insects. I’m no psychologist but I equate this with the many other comforts we now enjoy in our homes. Advancements in amenities is now common among most all the people and we enjoy comfortable and cozy homes like never before. So having a trail of pesky ants crawl across our new granite counter tops or a roach perched on the flat screen TV doesn’t fit well with the motif of the American abode.

3 Time Killers To Avoid On Your Pest Control Route

time killer https://pestcemetery.com/Time is the longest distance between two places.

Tennessee Williams

From day one on the route you learn that pest control is a fast paced occupation. Get to a job, get it done and get to the next and repeat. All day, everyday. It’s always been that way and for better or for worse, I don’t see that changing.

Now whether or not that’s a good thing we can talk about later on. Also, I do recognize there are pest control pros out there who are not “under the time gun.” ie; commercial techs, inspectors/quality control and institutional techs who, lets say service a large campus or commercial complex (s).

Still, even if you do fall into this latter category–believe me, you can still use these tips to avoid sometimes agonizing ticks of the clock fleeting by when all you want to do is “get moving!”

How I Suffered From Synthetic Pyrethroid Skin Parasthesia

cat hospital https://pestcemetery.com/In my little company we use a lot of different products but the growing majority seems to be synthetic pyrethroids. Professional pest control is not alone in this. In fact, if you look under any household sink or on the garage shelf, you’d find synthetic pyrethroids make up the lions share of insecticides used in American households. The list of pyrethroid based products is over 600 and growing all the time. It can be utilized in several different forms as well. Many granules, foggers, concentrates, sprays and aerosols have this man made version of pyrethrins (an “organic” insecticide made mostly from chrysanthemum flowers from Kenya) and for the most part they are considered safer than products in the past (DDT,chlordane & organophosphates in general). But as with ANY pesticide, natural or not, the word “safe” is something that cannot be categorically used since we’ve got that dastardly little word ending, “cide.”

Still, one of the many advantages of synthetic pyrethroids is that it is considered less of a threat to vertebrates because they (vertbrates) have better metabolism, higher body temperatures and different ion channel structures than insects. So while synthetic pyrethroids are quite deadly on a bugs nervous system,,,, on mankind and the like, not so much. Well at least for most vertebrates. Fish and birds can have problems and that list doesn’t include cats either. Apparently cats do not have glucuronidase which serves in hepatic detoxifying metabolism pathways, and just as apparent, that ain’t good. Who knew?

All Kidding A “Cide”

orkin man https://pestcemetery.com/Put “cide” at the end of any word and you’ve just killed the subject of that word. Cide means to kill. We’ve all heard of homicide, that’s the killing of a man or any other person. Did you know you can break the category of killing down to very specific or targeted meaning? Fraticide for instance means to kill ones brother, sorocide and it’s your poor sister who gets it. Prenticide = killing an apprentice, might be a notice to watch for the next time you fill out a job application. Ambicide is to take out a freind, senicide is the killing of old men, philosophcide means to kill a philosopher, while hosticide means to kill a guest or host. Now that’s a party invitation to die for. 😉

We also use the ‘cide’ ending to include animals. Ursicide is killing bears, tauricide bulls, canicide dogs, bovicide oxen and gallincide is chickens or turkeys. But I don’t think come Thanksgiving you’d want to accuse the host of being a ‘gallincider’ –there just might be a hosticide !!! (see above)

There are all kinds of ‘cides’ out there but we’ve either never heard of them or taken the time to think other than the broad meaning or the overall term. Cide, for most of us simply means TO KILL.

Ok, so how bout some insect and pest related cides?
