I Wish I Had All My Cancelations Back

pest control genie https://pestcemetery.com/Have you ever had the thought? – “man, if only I never had a cancelation- just think how big my route would be.”

Most companies keep a canceled file. I worked for one where 5 or 6 ceiling high cabinets were full of nothing but customers that once were. Wow! Seems like a big waste. You’d think once someone was on board with your service you’d keep them forever, but alas, not to be. Every pest control firm has clients who quit the service.

This question often crossed our entrepreneur Jim’s mind. He couldn’t fathom why some customers just ‘up and disappeared’, where they went, why they went.

So when Jim was presented with the awesome opportunity of having 3 pest control business related wishes come true by the Great Chlordaney–(follow this link to see how that happened) that was the first thing that entered his mind.

3 Moral Dilemmas For The Termite Control Operator – What Would You Do?

moral dilemma sign https://pestcemetery.com/There are moral and ethical challenges in just about anything you can think of. Some are as simple as black and white, right and wrong and there is no gray area at all. It’s pretty easy to decide what actions to take in those instances. It’s also one of those times when breaking the cardinal rule of “judge not lest ye be judged” is usually widely accepted–because you’ll have so many agreeing with your assessment.

However there are many many situations when it’s not so clear what’s acceptable, what’s right. When taking one action means the other left undone will be seen by some as worse than what you did. When you yourself wrestle with what to do and honestly–you can make a case for either or.

I suppose when I read this back, the last couple of sentences will make little to no sense. Maybe, that’s just perfect because it encapsulates exactly this gray area of those questionable ares of ethics and morality that every pest control tech and/or inspector will be faced with at some time or another.

So with that. Here are 3 situations that I’ve been faced with or seen others do. (explanations & other possible scenarios are also given so as to cover as many possibilities as possible)

What do you do?

If You Had Three Wishes In Your Pest Control Business- What Would They Be?

genie https://pestcemetery.com/Last inspection of the day and it couldn’t end quicker for Jim. Don’t get me wrong-Jim’s thankful for the business. He’s been on a roll as of late and it looks like his 7 years of hard work is finally paying off. Not quite top dog in his area but surely he has left the start up blues behind. He’s got a high 5 figure production route, new truck (new to him) and he’s been off on a few sweet vacations that he could only dream about a few years ago.

Still, Jim wants more, what single operator doesn’t? He’s paid his dues. I’ve watched Jim since day one and he’s had quite a few victories along the way–sadly, so many dark days too. But Jim always bounced back, always pushed forward and never gave up on insisting for a bright future even when the whole world told him he couldn’t have it. Jim’s an amazing guy.

How To Hide Termite Damage If You Absolutely Have To (painted termites)

revealed hidden termite damage https://pestcemetery.com/Over the years I’ve uncovered a lot of hidden termite damage in my WDO (wood destroying organism) inspections for home buyers and banks. Some has been very obvious and the checkbook is already on the kitchen counter, open and just waiting for a number. Most times however, it’s no more than a pin hole’s worth of evidence that the owners walked by everyday for years. Emotions run the full gambit with these reveals. Disbelief is the first emotion followed by anger (sometimes vicious) when they learn that little speck is keeping them from buying or selling what to them, may be their largest investment. Other times severe depression or sadness, always fear and doubt but what never fails– Their eyes go wide and their jaws drop when that tiny speck of mud I discovered turns into a huge chunk of the wall thats been destroyed by termites & the only thing that was holding it up may have been the drywall that just was removed. Such was the case with the pic above.

For a termite inspector, this is just part of the job, finding that evidence no matter how small and reporting it so that those who hired us can make an informed, educated decision on what is also to them, a HUGE investment.

Unfortunately, there are also times when termite evidence is hidden, but, not by the mere biology and behavior of the termite- but hidden, concealed on purpose, by the homeowner.

Long Live The Florida Pesticide Applicator

skull hand on B&G https://pestcemetery.com/

Pesticides came about after the first world war. Some brainy petrochemical money maker said, ‘Hey, that mustard gas worked great on people, maybe we could dilute it down and spray it on our crops to deal with pests.’
Woody Harrelson

Ignorance is not bliss…it’s simply ignorance

Have you ever gone into an account and someone looks at you in all seriousness and said, “Hey, aren’t you afraid of getting cancer?” I sure have, and over the years my responses have varied. I’ve tried to use humor –you know, the ol Dursban twitch line. I’ve tried to be scientific, I’ve ignored them, and once I even responded “yes I’m deathly afraid”- That person looked at me and their jaw dropped to the ground. I finished my comment by adding “it would help if you didn’t blow your cigarette smoke in my face.” Eh, that didn’t go over real well.

But in all these occasions I cannot remember ever really convincing anyone. So realizing this, I rarely take anyone to task. However, one consistent fact I always share that only changes as I spend more time in the industry is this. “I’ve been doing this 5 years & I’m perfectly healthy.”… I’ve been at this 10 years… 20 & now I can proudly I can say 30 plus & I am healthy as a horse. Alas, even with this my words so often fall on deaf ears.

But I’ve decided from now on I’m going to state this scientific fact & if you are a pesticide applicator in Florida, you might want to consider using it as well.

“It is a proven scientific fact–pesticide applicators were consistently and significantly healthier than the general population of Florida.”

Are single operator companies worth PCT’s & PMP’s & the Guru’s time. (an open letter)

One bug a boo of mine is that none of the ‘how to grow’ books, magazine articles or guru’s at speaking conferences really ever reach out to help the small company–the single operator. Now they say they do and their ad’s claim great strategies for small business growth and I believe 100% that they deliver EXACTLY what they say. It’s just that I think their definition of a small business might be a little different than mine and perhaps yours too.

You see I really don’t care right now about the cancelation rate of customers with bad office personnel- I don’t have a secretary!– Web presence and a company blog? Where can I find time or money to do that and get out and market belly to belly, raise my family and work this 2nd job I have till things get rolling? PR department, profits and loss, employee management, strategies for purchases and the percentage formula for everything from emotional buying decisions to tax strategies?. HEY BOOK WRITING GURU- I KNOW YOU’RE TRYING TO HELP BUT I CANNOT RELATE TO YOU!

Did You Choose Pest Control or did Pest Control Choose You?

bug man https://pestcemetery.com/There’s something about a person who’s “career” is in pest control. Specifically a tech. I’m often asked how I became a bug guy or hear stories of others and not one has ever been ‘born’ into it or knew from an early age that this is what he or she had such a passion for. Sure there are the family companies but I have two boys (men now) both who worked for me. Dad the bug man is all they knew growing up but now… One is an accomplished pilot & the other will one day no doubt be singing before large crowds. I see virtually the same thing with so many of my peers. So how do you explain all the great technicians we have in our industry? The real pros, dedicated people who seem like they could handle any situation and want to do absolutely nothing else with their lives? The answer is very simple, &, it may astound you.

The Transfer Effect That Has Nothing To Do With Termidor

nerves of insect https://pestcemetery.com/Do you remember when Termidor first came out? What an awesome product — but back then I hardly ran into anyone who knew exactly how it worked, what it did to the bug. Sure it killed em but in what way? When we asked, the answer we got more often than not was “The Transfer Effect.” Up to this point all we knew was cholinesterase inhibition, and firing synapses and the like. And we sounded real smart didn’t we? People shrilled with excitement when they heard how our products affected the nerves of a bug. Remember? Boy we were practically geniuses back then.

Still, this new thing called Termidor was solving our worst nightmares and although we began singing its praises from the roof tops, the best we could say as to ‘how’ it worked was…The Transfer Effect.

Today, most everyone in the industry is now well versed with the mode of action of Termidor. So much so, I rarely hear the words, “The Transfer Effect.” But did you know there’s another Transfer Effect in our trade? One that’s been around since the beginning but has still kept us guessing as to what the answer is? Yep, although most times it’s just an innocent byproduct of what we do. If not handled right, it can be very insidious as it lays claim to disgruntled, cancelled customers or worse yet, lost revenues.

This is the Transfer Effect that has nothing to do with Termidor.

Old Termite Techs Never Die-They Just Get Replaced By A Pipe Dream

old faithful https://pestcemetery.com/I had no idea about the Florida heat when I moved here back in 1990. Relentless and oppressing isn’t even the strongest way I could describe it. To add to my misery, my new company that was so happy to have me relocate 1500 miles, was too cheap to even give me a truck with working a/c. I use to show up to many a sales meeting looking like a drowned rat.

What I also had no idea about was the amount of WDO’s a person could do in a day. 10? 15?– Sound incredible? Well, I did that many and some days more as I left a trail of sweat criss crossing the town in my over heated rusted bucket of bolts.

You see, my employer at the time (a self proclaimed genius) had a pretty big niche in the real estate inspection market. No he wasn’t a guru marketer that knew how to network. He simply GAVE away his inspection service for free and every realtor in town used the heck out of me,… eh emm,, I mean,… his offer.

The Trail That Was Blazed By A Good Ol Country Boy

jeep climbing hill https://pestcemetery.com/I used to dream of the day when I’d have a full route. All my problems would be solved if I could just fill up that daily sheet with names and addresses. So I worked and scratched and clawed trying to achieve this goal.

Along the way my journey was fraught with problems. Some I knew would come and some I had no idea. A few were border line devastating and my dream was on the brink of collapse more than once. Most of my hurdles were not so deadly per se but relentless, – I’m not sure really which was worse. Day after day and week after week turned into months which led to years. Slow growth, rejections, hurtful cancelations, broken promises, idle times and even seeds of doubt planted by those I trusted most. Add to this equipment failures, mounting bills and loss of pride that always accompanies just barely scraping by– well you get the idea.

Still, I never gave up on my goal, I just knew my problems would all be behind me, if I could just fill up that sheet. Fast forward a few years & yes– I hit my goal. But no, my problems didn’t cease.

Astonishing Termite Evidence & Odd Places I’ve Found It

Part of the reason I love my job is that there is that even after 30 years, there’s always something new to see. I’ve seen homes where every square inch was infested with roaches, come face to face with angry bees in a refrigerator, wandering opossums in crawl spaces and even a rat in a toilet. Shhh, don’t let that last one get out, I have an article about that that some people aren’t happy with. 😉

One critter that constantly amazes me is termites. I find them in places you’d never think of and in ways that make me simply shake my head. Here is a collection of pics of some of what I’ve found. If you have any that you can add, I’d love to see them & I’ll be happy to post them (with credit) right along side of mine.

Enjoy.

Termite Teachable Moment- How Termites Sneak Into Your Home

Termites are blind and shun light. Just just how do they find their way into our home if they can’t see?

Well despite this apparent handicap, termites are very adept at finding food. They use “clues” that they find in their totally dark world and will search out those areas until— eureka– pay dirt. Well, for them maybe, but for you and me…… not so much.

Check out this video for a few of the most common entry points and hopefully you can avoid the pitfalls that catch too many of us by surprise.

Unspoken Problems With Your Tubes In The Wall

tubes in the wall tube https://pestcemetery.com/Tubes in the wall pest control systems seem like the perfect answer to many drawbacks of traditional pest control service. On paper- it seems like a ‘win win’ for both consumer and provider alike.

No one needs to be home, pesticides are kept “in the walls” where theoretically and in reality many insects gain access to your home & rain or shine the service almost never needs to be rescheduled. Whats not to like?

Despite this article I am NOT in the camp that says tube systems don’t work or tubes are a waste of time. You’ll get that argument mostly from vendors who don’t want to spend the $$ for the machine that services them. On the contrary, I believe tubes service has it’s place and works beautifully for tens of thousands of homes around the country. There are however, certain problems, certain circumstance and times where it may be best to reevaluate your use of this system.

When It May Be Time To Consider Another Way

Tube systems do little to nothing for certain pests. A spider on the ceiling, (spiders in general), german roaches, bed bugs, flying insects etc. Also, your in wall system can’t help if your home isn’t sealed very well. If you can see daylight around a window or door then so can a bug–and you won’t find a tube release portal there. Cracks, gaps or other such entry points often allow insects in while completely by passing the zones your tubes system treats.

Oh!, you didn’t know that your system doesn’t cover the ENTIRE house? Don’t feel bad, you’re not alone. Check out my other articles on tubes systems and you’ll see exactly where they do & don’t go.

Another Termite Teachable Moment ‘Where To Drill In The Tile’

cracked tile from termite work https://pestcemetery.com/Hey there termite techs! Ever get to a termite job, unpack and plug in your big drill only then to see that you’ll be drilling through a tiled floor? To make matters worse the sales weasel, eh,emm, I mean sales professional…. didn’t even tell them that you’d have to treat that area by using a HAMMER drill.

We all run into surprises from time to time and trying to explain to a customer you may damage something in their home ‘after the fact’ is not always pleasant. Well, this tip may not prevent a tile from chipping or cracking but, it’ll at least improve your odds of leaving the home relatively unscathed.

Check it out!
