Repelling rodents without baits-it really took a ‘Block’

I’ve done a lot of exclusion work over the years for rats and mice and this can be a very effective way in which to seal out rodents for a very long time. There are however places in every home where it is almost impossible to completely ‘proof’ an area where these crafty critters can’t get in. Garage doors no matter how modern always leave a gap in the corners for entry, holes drilled for cable or plumbing lines, unsealed walk through doors, under the siding or stucco and the list goes on and on. Sealing the obvious is a great first step but sometimes even the best rodent proofing job can’t give you 100% guarantee that a mouse or rat won’t make it’s way in.

For most people baiting or trapping vermin is not a problem but I still say why not just let the experts handle it . That said, a well placed and secured bait station or trap offers peace of mind that if a rodent does enter he won’t be around long enough to cause any problems. Sometimes however the client simply can’t have baits or traps around due to risks or preferences they have in their home. For these folks there is an alternative which seems to fit the bill. For the founder and CEO it almost never happened as she was blocked at almost every turn.

Get rid of your Armadillo

I often get questions on getting rid of Armadillos. Let me rephrase that, I often get asked to spray the yard for grubs and worms which in turn my customer says–will get rid of this destructive pest. Now I make my living treating bugs and this should be a welcome conversation for me but alas it usually ends up with me walking away without a check and a would be client sort of disappointed and perhaps a bit miffed.

An invitation to deceive

Recently I received an invitation to join a group of people to engage in discussions, networking and perhaps becoming friends with the host and all of it’s members. Since pestcemetery is listed on everything from sodahead to facebook it’s very likely that this was just a blanket request due to some key words or matching profile. I have no problem with this normally and get requests all the time for things that don’t quite seem to fit as I’m sure when I invite folks over to check me out. This one however seems to goes over the top so I thought I’d ask your opinion.

Bed bugs in yard sales-Caveat emptor

Warnings have gone out from the U.S. all the way to Canada about bed bugs in yard and garage sale items and even some alerts about buying used clothes and furniture from web sites like craigslist.org. I’ll be honest, I never thought about this even though for years I’ve warned clients about the possibility of bringing roaches home from these seemingly unlikely sources. Since it’s unlikely that you’ll find warning signs on the merchandise it might be a good idea to give this article a short read;

Do mice stink when they die?

For the most part people are pretty adamant about getting rid of mice. They aren’t fond of the idea of the little critters slinking around the kitchen, sneaking in the pantry and leaving all those little doo doo reminders in the silverware drawer. They know they want the mouse (or mice) gone but other than having the live problem running around I find that the #2 cause for concern for most people is having dead ones. Don’t get me wrong, dead is good for these folks but not dead in a wall or under a stove or other hard to locate place. This secondary worry can be just as strong for many people and they often ask me not to bait because there is no control of just where the rodent will end up when it expires. Their fear is that should the critter end up in a wall or other such inaccessible place and they’ll be stuck with days if not weeks of a morbid smell and that just simply won’t do. Oddly enough I also find that it’s these same people who raise concerns over traps or glue stations mostly because they don’t want to see the deceased mouse either but I digress.

Are we charging to much for bed bug work?

In my line of work you’ll always have the really expensive guys, the moderate and then the dirt cheap. All 3 models must work in pest control because I see the trucks speeding across town every day on their way to another job. (presumably) The expensive guys don’t always have the biggest name recognition, they might not have the most equipment and their techs aren’t always the sharpest knives in the drawer either. On the other end of the spectrum the dirt cheap outfit may be driving a big Dually with a 300 gallon split tank, electric dusters and extension ladders and he may have passed his certification test with a 95%. Even the middle roaders might go either way and as a matter of fact I don’t think you can put any of these categories with the perceived stereotype at all. I see different combinations everyday and I try very hard to resist judging another pest company until I’ve see first hand what they’re all about. These companies prices can range from the $13 spray job to the $85 version and I’ve seen both fail miserably and both succeed. One thing almost all firms seem to have higher prices on however is bed bugs. The $13 suddenly becomes $1000 and the $85 turns into a whopping 3 grand. Why?

My big mouth and termite work from hell

I’m a glutton for punishment and as a salesman I could never shut my mouth when it came to the words-“Ok we’ll do it”. Problem was, it wasn’t me being punished so much as the poor techs that had to go out and ‘deliver’ on MY PROMISES. As a tech myself I hated when salesman did this to me that I swore I’d never be guilty of the same. There is something about the sales process however that sucks both the client and the salesman in and during this short euphoric time of a sale, things are said, expected and implied and it’s never a problem until you see the service guy stare you down the next morning as you walk through the shop on your way to the morning sales meeting. Here’s 2 quick stories of jobs I sold that the techs wanted to kill me for. It is at this time, some 2 decades later, I’d like to take this time to extend my apologies to any technician I unnecessarily burdened with my big mouth.

My broken ankle, my unbreakable wife and my fragile business

Struggling to start a new business is tough in any economic climate. Do it when times are bad and the competition is out there clawing and climbing all over you just to get that all important client before you do. Do it when things are good and hesitant entrepreneurs suddenly lose their shyness and companies are coming out of the wood work so the fight for new customers is just as fierce but the punches just come from different directions. Needless to say starting a business (any business) is very difficult and if you add unnecessary or unforeseen problems it can be the nail in the coffin.

The Darker Side Of Eugenol Oil

There seems a clamor that’s building which is now become a low roar. Eugenol oil is peaking the interest of many a consumer for its quick knock down properties of insects, spiders and even weed control. This miracle product is fast becoming the talk of forums and soon to supplant bed bugs as the #1 question on my Ask The Bug Doctor feature of this website. Let’s face it, no one ever heard of this product really until a little TV show came around called Billy The Exterminator and now it seems to be all the rage. You can often see the star of the show sprit-zing Eugenol oil from a nondescript bottle and he often explains its virtues. The intranet is filled with references and websites that tout its goodness for the environment because of its natural ingredients. I mean who can argue with cloves mixed with water right? As is so often the case with this or any product there are downfalls or hidden side effects but for some reason very few people wish to speak up when it involves a environmentally safe product. This article deals with the darker side of Eugenol oil and I believe it’s something you should consider.

Determining monolithic slab and termite entry

What does it matter what kind of slab you have if you’ve got termites? It’s all the same treatment isn’t it? Well I do realize that with the advent of Termidor and other non repellant termiticides construction knowledge is not as key as it used to be but in dealing with termites , every advantage is very often needed.

It’s Your Business – Let It Grow

The fly that doesn’t want to be swatted is most secure when it lights on the fly-swatter.  ~G.C. Lichtenberg

How do you handle problems in your business? It’s a fair question because everyone and every firm deals with them all the time. Are you proactive and attack it head on or do you quietly but attentively watch and let it play out? Both are correct if in the end your dilemma passes you by and you surge ahead. Both are wrong if the trouble persists and eats away at your company.

The strongest finger in the world-using bubbled paint to find termites

A few years ago I received a call from a very angry man. He owned a home that I performed a WDO (wood destroying organism report) on and was furious that I found termites and termite damage. Now on one hand I couldn’t blame him. He had the home treated with liquids and with baits which he said cost him over $3000.00 so when I found a problem, well let’s just say he wasn’t happy.

Could you still do pest control if bugs were cute as puppies?

Tonight I had my monthly night run and one stop was a large nursing home kitchen where I recently had to set out some mouse control stations. The ladies hated it the other day when I broke out the glue boards and snap traps. “So cute, don’t kill em” they all retorted with a sorrowful tone. I explained that baits weren’t an option and the big boss wanted these things gone quick because they were expecting the state inspector any day. Of course they agreed but it didn’t make them any less sad.

Chemical spills-do you know what to do?

Do you know how to handle a chemical spill? It doesn’t happen very often but if and when it does it can quickly ruin more than just your day. News agencies just love accidents like these and wouldn’t it be grand to see your companies logo splashed all over the 6 o’clock news with the back drop of some dead fish floating in a near by pond or the Hazmat crews in their astronaut suits roping off an area near the local school. Before you read any further take the pre test on spill control and see how you do.
