C.Y.A. Real Estate Termite Inspections

The termite inspection for the purpose of a real estate transaction is the #1 reason for litigation against pest control companies in America & I don’t think this is going to change anytime soon. It doesn’t matter if you’re the seller, buyer or just refinancing, the thought of finding termites can really put a dent in a real estate deal. Banks baulk at approving the loan, buyers head for the doors and sellers get angry at the audacity of some dweeby termite guy coming in and wanting $1500.00 for a small speck of mud. It gets to the point they think YOU single handedly ruined their chance to cash in on a deal with huge financial ramifications so giving extra ammo in the form of a mistake or omission is never a good thing. Put all this together and you’ve got litigation soup just boiling under the surface and if you add any heat whatsoever this caldron is going to boil over and guess who it is that usually gets burned. YOU, the termite guy who was just doing his or her job!

Spider Babies Hatch Despite Dead Mother

When you think of baby bugs you probably tend to think of the mother right there with them tending to their every need. This is true of a vast array of insects but not all. The earwig for example stays with her brood and actually defends them when danger is near. Bees and ants take care of their larvae’s needs (there the babies everybody calls ugly) from cleaning to feeding and even some spiders will carry their young on there backs until they are mature enough to go out on their own. Some other bugs like the oriental cockroach will just lay the ootheca is a secure place and even disguise it a bit but then just head off to resume her life.

What’s The Grossest Thing You’ve Ever Seen In Pest Control?

So my son and I were sitting around talking about things I’ve seen in my career. He’s worked with me a for awhile and on any normal day you can be treated to some really wild things. The conversation eventually turned to what was the GROSSEST thing I’ve ever seen and that kind of took me back. To be honest I couldn’t really decide because there have been so many disgusting, putrid, sickening and gut-churning scenes I’ve been privy to over my many years that for me to pick one would be impossible. I also think this may be something subjective and what might turn my stomach might not phase you at all. So below I’ve narrowed it down to my top 2 most repulsive things I’ve witnessed.

Now I know I’m not the ONLY guy or gal in this business that has seen completely grossed out things so I’d love to hear yours. Just read your choices, vote and then make sure to give us an account of something you’ve seen that made your knees buckle or got your lunch churning. Consider it therapy or a cleansing of the soul and a chance for you to vote on your, eh, emmm- uh, favorite.

When Phobias Collide-Is Pest Control An Environmental Disaster?

I’ve run into a lot of folks who have legitimate concerns of what I’m using and how I plan to apply it. I have absolutely zero problems with this because I’m in their home or business and and they have every right to know. Generally speaking these folks hear about 20 seconds of what I have to say and they simply nod their heads and say go ahead. Since a few seconds isn’t enough time to even explain the theory of crack and crevice treatments I can only assume that my confident reassurance is all they really needed. Still I treat their castle with care and respect and place my ‘cides’ where they’ll do the most good and be out of harms way. I have very few people who after watching me service a home that ever still have questions about my commitment to their safety and I believe the same is true with almost every pro.

Yellow Jackets In A Wall

Yellow Jackets can be a real pain, figuratively and literally. They are known for their ability to repeatedly sting you but did you know they also bite? The foragers out and about are usually not a problem unless you begin swatting at them or unsuspectingly take a drink from your soda can that one has ventured into. OUCH!

It is however being around the nest that will turn these beneficial creatures into aggressive attackers. Great care should be taken anytime you’re dealing with a jackets nest. They are often confused or mislabeled as bees and that can be a costly mistake. Please consider calling in a professional anytime you come across a stinging pests nest. It’s the safer thing to do and well worth the money. I ran into a small nest the other day and in this video I’ll give you a couple of tips of how I handle it.

Pest Detective-The Thanksgiving Mystery

Sara our pest technician has a problem, her client has been planning a big Thanksgiving dinner with tons of food, family and decorations galore but for the past week she has been inundated with fluttering bugs all throughout her home. Sara is the regular tech for this home and she likes this account very much because the lady is so nice and the Grandfather is an old time pest pro that occasionally has the energy to tell old stories but he’s seen some better days. Sara needs to find a quick solution that will rid the house of this persistent pest but she soon realizes these bugs look familiar but they just don’t quite fit the bill of what she’s seen before.

Can you help Sara out?

Like any good tech Sara collects the bugs for identification and she knows immediately they are beetles but she doesn’t know which kind and her job was made harder by the lack of any real distinct features. Most were on the window sill of the front room. She’s pretty good with pest ID but as with most of us, pantry pests and beetle ID is not one of her long suits. The beetle is very small, 1/8 inch or so and slightly oval in shape. She’s thinking carpet beetles but the markings on these guys are somewhat yellow with brown and the few larva she found just didn’t have the large ‘bristle tail’ she seemed to remember from a book or a class she had a long time ago. She only has this last visit to figure it out and she’s really pressed for time. So she quickly assesses the situation and for now she rules out carpet beetles and decides to look in all the places a pantry pest could be found.

The food pantry was clean as a whistle and not a bug to be seen, she checks her mouse bait placed in the garage just this fall and not a clue to be had. Pet food bags are clean and she even finds an old box of dog biscuits under the sink but still there is nothing to explain the beetles she’s found. Being the good tech she is Sara even checked the Indian corn decor hung on the front door next to the big bushel of traditional Thanksgiving artifacts the homeowner used to set the mood for her guests. Finding nothing she begins to think maybe it is carpet beetles after all.

An Old Dog Needs No New Tricks

By this time Grandpa has woken from a nap in his chair and is curious as to why the normally efficient Sara is frantically poking all around the home. “What’s got you all a flutter Sara?” Grandpa says eager to help. She explains the dilemma, shows him her bugs and the old pro just smiles and says,”Cabinet Beetles dear, we used to see them a lot around Thanksgiving when folks were more authentic and used real decorations not the fake stuff you see today, forget the corn make sure to throw out the chaff!” and with that he gave her a wink, pulled his afghan up over his chest and quickly fell back asleep. Sara’s heart filled with hope but just for a moment — “of course they’re cabinet beetles”, she said aloud in frustration, “Everybody calls em cabinet beetles but which kind are they and WHY aren’t in any of the CABINETS!”

Almost ready to give up Sara sat for a moment and pondered on what the seasoned pro said. Why just use a general group name and not say what kind of beetle and what did he mean about ‘real decorations and chaff?’ That’s when it hit her and she smiled from ear to ear as she patted the master technician on the head and headed for the door.

Have you figured it out like Sara has? Click this link to take the quiz and see if you are a super sleuth.

All Bugs On Deck-Exterior Pest Control Using Dusts

There’s a great philosophy in pest control that goes like this; Kill the bugs outside & you won’t need to kill them inside. Sounds like pretty good advice. There are always critters scouting around your home looking for a way in and believe me, it’s not very difficult to find on most homes. While pest proofing is also an excellent strategy using caulks, weather stripping or other sealing methods don’t forget about your exterior pest control barrier. It’s a great line of defense that can be so effective and it can be applied in areas where pests may build up away from the home and this allows you to keep bug ‘pressures’ low.

When Phobias Collide-The Termite Who Cried Wolf

As with any WDO (wood destroying organism report) I make sure to list the things that hindered my inspection such as furniture, wall coverings or insulation in the attic. The report itself states that it is a Visual Inspection only and there is no guarantee something isn’t hidden deep in the wall where no one can see. That clause put in by the State hardly holds anybody back however and almost 90% of all litigation comes from WDO inspections regardless of the legal disclaimers. Such was the track I found myself on with one such inspection.

When Phobias Collide-The Dousing

There are too many instances I could write about here that to single out one might give you the impression this is a rarity. The opposite is true. However, it was from this one I drew some valuable lessons and decided never again to allow for anyone’s fears to dictate how much product I used or where I was going to treat. My license and health are worth far too much even if someone’s irrational fears are too much for them to bear and they succumb to the old adage that more is better. As a pest control technician it’s far better to learn this lesson from the pages of book or web site than the way in which I did. Hopefully with my example you’ll be able to avoid this situation should it come your way and stand your ground-When Phobias Collide.

As a wayward spider dangled lifelessly from the ceiling at the end of it’s web I could hear my homeowner shrieking from the living room gasping out words that by now I could just barely comprehend having heard this same shrill alarm for the past hour and a half. “there’s another one” she exclaimed in her desperate voice-”come quick, spray him, KILL HIM!”– As her voice cracked her incessant commands, I wondered just how I let this situation get so out of hand.

When phobias collide

phobia |ˈfōbēə| noun
an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something : he had a phobia about being under water | a phobia of germs | a snake phobia.

I don’t know what it’s like to live life in such fear of something that it permeates your thinking, dominates your decisions and limits you to such an extent that everything you do is based on a defensive posture. Fear is a natural thing (I guess) because we all have it to some degree but for a few, it is all consuming and whether it’s a product of a line of thinking we’ve been exposed to or an experience that impacted our life to a great degree I couldn’t say. In my career I’ve seen this first hand on two fronts and I’m not sure which is worse but I know when this pair of phobias collide I’m in for a very intense time.

I ‘scene’ it doing pest control

I love pest control because of the daily adventure into all of the different aspects of life. I mean you get to see things that not many other professions allow for. How things are made, beautiful homes, sickening gross scenes and the amazing ingenuity of pests as they find the damnedest ways to infest our homes and businesses.

Spraying around bird cages and fish tanks

Many pesticide labels state “Toxic to birds and fish” so what are you suppose to do when you have ants or pests invading and you have a bird present or a fish tank in the room? I mean, how would you feel if you were trapped in a small area and someone came in filling the air with something that choked you up, caused you to get sick and you couldn’t fly or swim away to escape? These household pets are really at your mercy because you can’t always move them while treating and any unfortunate mis-step could result in a sick pet or worse.

Borax- Beauty and the Beast

Death Valley, there are no sounds of birds that fill the air, no crickets chirp or children playing in the summer sun, the oppressive and relentless heat sees to that. This desolate section of earth reaches temperatures of 136 degrees and if you were fool hearty enough to visit you might stop by Bad Water or Furnace Creek and pick up a souvenir. I hear bleached bones are quite popular. There is however a buzz that’s unmistakable and a low roar that has been felt in virtually every corner of the world that emanates from this harsh and deserted place. In 1872, Boron was discovered in this place that’s only slightly cooler than Hell itself and this virtuous mineral was first mined from what is now the largest open pit on the planet. Brought to the world by one 20 Mule Team at a time the miracle product Borax was born and it became one of the most common household products ever used.

The Beast Of Borax Can Kill You

So what’s the problem with Borax? Follow this link to see The Beauty of Borax.

Peruse any DIY web site or forum where people are trading recipes for a myriad of pest control issues and it won’t be long before you see someone telling the world to use Borax to get rid of ‘said’ problem. These concoctions range from mixing Borax and sugar for killing roaches to sprinkling an entire box all over your flooring for fleas. You can even get rid of mice with this miracle product by simply lining the floors along the walls with a “thick coating’ of the stuff. Mice don’t like walking in it and will soon run away” or so touts the anonymous poster. How nice and how kind to the mouse not to kill it, finally a humane way to get rid of mice and still be safe for the kids- I say keep some in the box so when they find your dead body they’ll have something to make a chalk line around you as you lay on the floor – dead!
