Ever wonder how it is that termites can pop up in the middle of your home? I mean, they’re blind, shun light and can only feel their way along so how can they find any wood at all to eat in which to survive? It seems impossible but termites don’t know that. They do more damage than storms and fires combined every year and I can only imagine what the devastation would be if they were not hindered by their limitations.
Just like so many creatures in nature they don’t look at shortcomings or lack of abilities as a handicap. They exploit the talents and attributes they do have to their advantage in a big way. Actually when they find themselves under your home they are quite good at searching out every square inch until they hit that one crack or gap that allows them entry. It doesn’t have to be very big, just about the thickness of a business card and they are in. Termites love hard surfaces such as roots, plumbing or the underside of slabs to follow along and they tunnel through the dirt like you or I walk through the park. Once food is found they lay pheromone trails in which other hungry termites follow and the destruction of your home begins. The following is a short but descriptive video presentation that may help you understand the secret travels of the subterranean termite. While we may not see them as they criss cross just under our feet, they are there, looking for a way in. It is what they do, it is their journey under the slab. Enjoy
