This gal demands respect along with her 700 to 800 sisters if the colony reaches its peak. Actually the Bald Faced Hornet is just a larger Yellow Jacket not a Hornet. Don’t ask me, I’m not an entomologist but I did spend the night at a Holiday Inn.

Carpenter Bees

The Carpenter bee is a solitary bee that is basically harmless to you and I. Try telling that to the upset homeowner who is being dive bombed by 15 or 20 of them around her back deck. Although they are not part of a colony they are all attracted to the same exposed wood so it’s not uncommon to find several dozen of them competing for their stake in eave or section of your wood siding. The heavy bee also produces a menacing buzz when she flies which usually sends the Mrs. into a panic.

Great ball of bees

Almost every year bees exhibit this kind of behavior. It’s called ‘budding’. It’s one way in which large colonies can perpetuate the species. From the colony a new queen bee is determined and she takes flight. Sometimes 1/2 or more of the workers will follow, (oh and one lucky male get’s to go too)
